Beetroot poop: is it red from beets or something else?

Can beetroot really turn poop red?

Yes. It’s common enough that both the NHS and MedlinePlus mention it. The NHS page on bleeding from the bottom says some foods, like beetroot and tomatoes, can make poo look red. The MedlinePlus page on black or tarry stools adds that beets and foods with red coloring can sometimes make stools look reddish.

Some people notice pink or red pee after beets as well. On its own, that tends to point the same way: food color.

What does food red usually look like?

There’s no perfect rule, and we won’t pretend there is. But people describe beet-red poop as:

  • the color mixed through the poop, rather than streaks on the outside
  • a magenta or pinkish tone, rather than bright blood red
  • appearing once or twice after a beet meal, then going back to normal

That last one is the most useful. If it clears up after a day or two of no beets, food is the likely story.

When is red poop not beetroot?

Get it checked if any of these apply:

  • you haven’t eaten beets, tomatoes or anything with red food coloring
  • you see bright red blood on the toilet paper or in the water
  • your poo is dark red or black (the NHS says this needs an urgent GP appointment or NHS 111)
  • you have bloody diarrhea, a sudden severe tummy ache or lots of blood (NHS says call 999 or go to A&E for heavy bleeding)
  • you also have weight loss, tiredness or a change in your bowel habit for 3 weeks or more

Bright red blood after a poo is often from piles or a small tear called an anal fissure, says the NHS. Those are common and treatable, but the NHS still advises seeing a GP about blood in your poo. More in blood on toilet paper.

How to check without guessing

  1. Think back two days. Beets, red sauces, tomato soup, red sweets, red drinks.
  2. Skip red foods for a couple of days. If the color goes, that’s reassuring.
  3. Write it down. Date, what you ate, what you saw. This helps if you do end up at the GP.
  4. If you’re unsure, ask. MedlinePlus notes that a provider can test stool for blood. That’s a quick way to stop wondering.

A note on the app: PoopAI logs your meal and your Bristol type, and you can add a photo, but it doesn’t read color. The “reddish-pink” line above is a note you’d write yourself.

What about black poop?

Different story, different list. MedlinePlus says black or tarry, foul-smelling stools can be a sign of bleeding higher up in the gut, while iron tablets, bismuth medicines, black licorice and blueberries can turn poop black without bleeding. Our black poop page covers it.

Wrap-up

Beetroot is one of the most common harmless reasons for red poop, and a little detective work usually settles it. But if you haven’t eaten anything red, if there’s blood on the paper, or if you just don’t feel right, don’t talk yourself out of a GP visit. Nobody there will think it’s a silly question.
