What's the best app for a low FODMAP diet?

Three jobs a FODMAP app might do

  1. Food guide. Tells you whether a food is low or high in FODMAPs, and at what serving size.
  2. Logger. Records what you ate and what happened to your bowels, so you can look back.
  3. Learning and recipes. Explains the diet and gives you meal ideas.

No single app has to do everything. Most people end up with one food guide and one way of logging.

The Monash FODMAP app (food guide and journal)

Monash University developed the low FODMAP diet. According to Monash, its app:

  • has the largest FODMAP food database available
  • gives an easy guide to which foods are low and high in FODMAPs
  • includes over 80 low FODMAP recipes
  • includes a digital version of the FODMAP Diet Guide booklet
  • helps you find certified low FODMAP products, make a shopping list and check unfamiliar foods

Monash’s IBS page adds that the app includes a digital food and symptom journal, with graphs to help you track symptoms. If you want to know whether a food fits, and to note how you felt, that’s the job it’s built for.

PoopAI (logger)

PoopAI is a bowel and meal tracker. Here’s exactly what it does:

  • Bristol types 1 to 7 with optional photos
  • meals logged by photo or text
  • trigger tags like dairy, gluten, FODMAPs, caffeine and more
  • AI photo analysis to speed up logging
  • weekly reports and charts
  • stealth HealthAI mode for privacy
  • pixelated photos on Android

And what it doesn’t do: it has no FODMAP food database, it doesn’t log symptoms, pain or mood, and it has no PDF export. It’s for spotting patterns between meals and Bristol types, which is especially handy during reintroduction (see our FODMAP reintroduction log).

Using both together

Mon 12:30 Lunch (photo): garlic test, 1 clove tags: FODMAPs
Mon 16:00 Poop: type 4
Tue 12:30 Lunch (photo): garlic test, 2 cloves tags: FODMAPs
Tue 17:00 Poop: type 6

Check the food in the Monash app, then log the meal and your poop in PoopAI. At the end of the week, your Bristol chart shows how things went.

What to look for in any app

  • Clear sources. Is the food data from a research team?
  • Privacy. Can you lock or hide it? Read the privacy policy.
  • Speed. If logging takes ages, you’ll stop.
  • Honesty. Avoid apps that claim to diagnose or cure IBS.

Don’t go it alone

Monash says a FODMAP diet should be followed under the guidance of a dietitian with IBS skills, and NICE says diet advice should come from an expert such as a dietitian. The NHS says a GP may refer you to one. It’s a short-term elimination and reintroduction process, not a forever diet. Read our low FODMAP phases guide.

When to see a GP

If you haven’t been diagnosed with IBS, see a GP before starting the diet, especially if you have weight loss, blood in your poo or symptoms that are getting worse.

Wrap-up

The best low FODMAP setup is often two tools: a food guide to check what to eat, and a logger to see what happened. Add a dietitian, and you’ve got a solid plan.

Quick answers

What is the best app for the low FODMAP diet?

It depends on the job. For checking foods, the Monash FODMAP app comes from the team that developed the diet. For logging meals and poops, a tracker like PoopAI fits. Many people use both.

Does PoopAI have a FODMAP food database?

No. PoopAI lets you tag meals with FODMAPs and other triggers, but it doesn't rate foods. Use a food guide like the Monash app for that.

What does the Monash FODMAP app include?

Monash says it includes a guide to low and high FODMAP foods, over 80 recipes, a digital diet guide, certified product search and a shopping list.

Do I need a dietitian?

Monash says the diet should be followed under the guidance of a dietitian, and the NHS says a GP may refer you to one.

Can an app diagnose IBS?

No. Only a doctor can diagnose IBS. Apps help you organize information to share.
